With Papua New Guinea now a mainstay of our annual itineraries and our annual tour to East Timor starting and finishing on the Indonesian island of Bali, we just couldn’t resist a further foray into remote SE Asia with our inaugural trip to West Papua!
To say you will be getting off the beaten path on this trip is a bit of an understatement. You will be hiking the Baliem Valley through stunning scenery, pristine villages of the ethnic Dani and other groups, with terraced fields and rainforest, and local culture galore.
You’ll also be exploring in Jayapura, the main city in West Papua, where we check out the culinary scene, the beaches, the views from the hilltops and sail across a lake to see the local tradition of bark painting in a traditional village. Expect not to bump into any other travellers in this hard to reach but extremely rewarding part of the world.
You may start and finish the tour in Bali, or you may start and finish in Jayapura, West Papua for a reduced fee, please get in touch for options. We also recommend joining our Combo tour with an overland trip to East Timor to explore the furthest reaches of Indonesia on the islands of Timor and Papua.
