Sunday 23rd October – Arrival

• Arrival by own means and transfer to our hostel in the centre of Georgetown ($5), Rima Guesthouse.
• For those arriving early we will be heading to the Demerara Rum Distillery to see the how this national and regional drink is produced and maybe taste a few samples
• Meet the group and YPT guide at 6pm in the hotel lobby for a pre-tour meeting
• Head out for dinner at JR Burgers – a unique Guyanese experience! This place has burgers with pineapple slices, heavily Jamaican influenced and vegetarian options also available
• Move on to a local establishment for a rum or a local Banks beer, available as a lager or a milk stout
• Overnight in Georgetown

Monday 24th October – Kaieteur Falls

• Breakfast in Hotel
• Trip highlight: We get up early for our charter flight from Georgetown to one of the wonders of the world, the rarely visited Kaieteur Falls
• Head to the airport and check in at 11.30 am for our private 1 pm flight to the falls
• One of the highlights of this trip are the amazing views from our prop plane as we reach the falls
• We arrive at Kaieteur Falls at 2pm, which is only 15 minutes walk from the airport
• 2 hours exploring the falls and taking some epic photos. The Kaieteur Falls are on the Potaro River right in the middle of the Guyanan rainforest and because of their remoteness may not be well known but are one of the most impressive in the world
• Catch the 4 pm flight back to Georgetown arriving at 5pm
• After such an epic day out we head to Salt and Pepper for some good Creole food and deserved drinks
• Overnight in Georgetown

Tuesday 25th October – Georgetown

• After breakfast we head out to explore Georgetown on a walking tour of this very manageable city, the only capital city in South America to have been a British colony
• We take in the City Hall, St George’s Cathedral and hang out people watching in Independence Square
• Head to the Parliament Building which dates from 1829
• Explore the Stabroeak Market with the locals
• In the afternoon we’ll check out the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology which gives a great lowdown on the Amerindian heritage of the country
• If there’s time we’ll stroll around the Botanical Gardens which is where locals and especially families head to to relax
• We go for a quick rest back at the hostel before hitting the town. Georgetown is hardly a metropolis and has a very relaxed Caribbean feel to it. We start by hitting some of the many rum bars before finishing at the 24-hour nightclub/bar popular with the locals called Jerries
• Overnight in Georgetown

Wednesday 26th October – Paramaribo

• Up crazy early to be picked up by our 4am bus for Paramaribo, capital of Suriname. This is backpacking and adventure travel at its very best as our private bus drives us through pristine countryside to the ferry port to Suriname, where we jump on the 9am ferry and then board another bus to Paramaribo
• Check into Guesthouse Zus for a quick freshen-up before we begin to explore Suriname.
• Walking tour of the capital including St Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Presidential Palace
• Head to Fort Zeelandia, important site in Surinamese history and with great views at the end of the day
• Beautiful Caribbean sunset at Waterkant
• We go for dinner at a Javanese place, Java being where most Indonesian migrants to Suriname came from, with a bit of Dutch colonial history thrown in
• Head out for a night on the town to see how the local rum compares to it’s western neighbour
• Overnight in Paramaribo

Thursday 27th October – Paramaribo

• Today we’ll be up early for a trip highlight to the Paramaribo flea market where we can see the local people buying and selling a whole manner of things. This is a real look into the contemporary life of this developing country.
• We’ll hire some bicycles and cycle out of town to explore a bit including former plantation grounds
• Lunch of street food if you are brave enough
• Seeing as we are in the Caribbean and having been traveling hard we take the afternoon to go to the main public beach to rock out and relax with a few cocktails and a swim in the sea. This can also be used as free time as it will be our last afternoon in Paramaribo
• Dinner in an East Indian restaurant
• You cannot truly know a place unless you have have been to its main nightclub, so we visit Mystique Poolcafe for a night drinking with the locals
• Overnight in Paramaribo

Friday 28th October – Cayenne

• Free morning in Paramaribo before we begin the late morning drive to Cayenne, the capital of one of the furthest parts of the EU – French Guiana (they even take Euros!), again taking it to travel extremes by having to board a rickety boat to cross the river.
• Afternoon arrival and check into our hotel Ket Tai for some quick R&R
• Lunch in the city before we begin a walking tour of this French territory/colony including Place de Palmistes, colonial French Architecture, St Saviour Cathedral, and Fort Ceparou
• Dinner and drinks in the city and overnight

Saturday 29th October – Kouro and Devil’s Island

• 5:30am rise to catch a 6am shared taxi for the 1 hour drive to Kouro, home of the Guiana Space Centre and the main spaceport of the European Space Agency!
• Trip highlight: Arrive for an 8am tour, this spaceport is close to the equator and thus easier to launch a spacecraft into an equatorial, geostationary orbit!
• Hop on a 1 hour cruise to Devil’s Island for a 3 hour tour of the most infamous penal colony in the world: only 2,000 survived out of 60,000 souls imprisoned there. This was a French prison in the 19^th and 20^th centuries with people sent there from France itself and French colonies worldwide. Home to Alfred Dreyfus in the late 19^th A chilling place.
• Evening arrival back in Cayenne hopefully in time for the sunset and our last night out before the end of the trip
• Overnight in Cayenne

Sunday 30th October – Departure

• End of tour and goodbyes, or for those traveling onto Cuba the next leg of our trip
