Join us as we return for a truly off the beaten track experience to one of the least visited destinations on Earth – Somaliland. We have timed your visit to partake in the country’s largest celebration of the year – Somaliland Independence Day.
Your journey with us begins in the capital city of Hargeisa; the gateway into the former British protectorate and self-declared Republic of Somaliland. This de-facto state declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991. However, no international organisation has recognized its sovereignty.
Still recovering from a brutal civil war, today the area is safe and the locals are incredibly welcoming and interested in foreign visitors. Somaliland is fundamentally different from the other countries in the region — and almost anywhere else on the planet.
Once you’ve explored and experienced the city life and celebrations in Hargeisa we’ll head north towards the coastal town of Berbera – the largest seaport of the country. On the way we’ll make a special visit to Laas Geel which is the most important rock art site in all of Africa. These caves contain some of the oldest cave paintings on the horn of Africa; the vibrant colours and well-preserved paintings are estimated to be over ten thousand years old.
Once in Berbera we’ll take in all the unique sights of the city as it’s built mostly of Ottoman, Persian, and British architecture. You’ll then have the opportunity to board a boat and hunt down the shipwrecks of the Aden Gulf. YPT can’t pass an untouched beach without taking a swim; giving you a chance to mix and mingle with the locals.
Our Somaliland tour can be done as a unique standalone tour, or you may combine it with Djibouti or Eritrea on our Horn of Africa Combo.
