Rojava, also known as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), is a defacto independent region of Syria bordering Iraq and Turkey that arguably exists as the only autonomous, or indeed functioning, left-wing anarchist community in the world.
The origins of Rojava’s governance model trace back to the Syrian Civil War, when Kurdish groups and other local communities took advantage of the conflict to establish self-governing institutions. It gained international recognition for its role in fighting ISIS.
Join us on this research trip to Rojava, where we’ll together learn about this unique attempt to create a grassroot, participatory democracy in the midst of a complex and volatile region. It will be a chance to exchange with the locals about their history, modern life and their hopes for the future.
This trip is capped at 8 people, all of whom must be known and vetted by us.
