Our Cyprus tour while take you to the unknown side of the island. While largely known as a vacation resort for British and European holidaymakers, Cyprus has a very different side. After being ravaged by war following the Turkish invasion of 1974, the island was divided in two, with a UN-designated buffer zone separating the two halves. This zone encompasses abandoned towns, cities, and airports, turning them into ghost settlements.
Your journey with us begins in the Republic of Cyprus, the southern part of the island, which is easily accessible by various budget airlines. We’ll spend an evening in Nicosia, the world’s only divided capital city.
The following day, we’ll cross the UN Buffer Zone into Northern Cyprus, officially known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). From there, you’ll explore the Turkish-controlled side of the island, a region few people visit. You’ll discover ghost cities, military standoffs, controversial real estate, stunning beaches, and world-class ancient sites, all with minimal tourist crowds.
This tour coincides with Northern Cyprus’ most important holiday, TRNC National Day. On November 15, 1983, the TRNC declared its independence – which has only been recognized by Turkey. Expect a dazzling air show featuring modern military fighter jets, an impressive military parade, and a festive atmosphere throughout the streets, bars, and restaurants of Kyrenia. This is truly the best time to experience Northern Cyprus.
We will also explore the recently reopened area of Varosha, the Famagusta Ghost Town. In the 1970s, Famagusta was one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Its extravagant high-rise hotels lined the sandy beaches of Cyprus’s east coast, attracting tourists with turquoise seas, balmy sunshine, and an idyllic lifestyle. However, since the 1974 invasion, when the city’s inhabitants fled, the zone has remained an abandoned buffer zone between the Greek and Turkish parts of the island, a time capsule from a bygone era. Recently reopened to tourists, Varosha still bears the scars of war, with bullet-riddled buildings and a desolate atmosphere.
