Mongolia is fast becoming one of our favourite summer destinations. Before it becomes too touristy, YPT takes you to this quintessential land of wilderness! This trip is a great introduction to a country that can often take a lot of time and effort to visit. Not only will you get to scratch off the list all the activities which Mongolia is renowned for, but you will also get the chance to see one of the world’s most interesting cultural events, Naadam Festival.
The festival dates from the time of Genghis Khan, when it was implemented to determine the top soldiers in his fierce and unconquerable army. Today, it remains Mongolia’s most important cultural event. The entire country has a week-long public holiday, and the winners of each sport become de-facto national icons. Each player represents their province, and even the provinces are rewarded with more public funding and benefits if they produce a winner in one of the three Naadam sports – horse riding, wrestling, and archery.
The trip begins with seeing the incredible opening ceremony of the Naadam Festival. Afterwards, we’ll spend the next two days observing each of the breathtaking sports of Naadam. We’ll then head to visit both Mount Khogno nature reserve and Terelj National Park, both famed for their wildlife and unforgettable trekking opportunities. Here, you’ll get the chance to experience traditional Mongolian nomadic life.
We’ll stay with local nomadic families in the Gers, which are the Mongolian forms of Yurts. At the nomadic camps, you’ll enjoy traditional Mongolian hospitality and home cooked food. We’ll ride camels in the dunes and horses on the steppes before heading back to Ulaanbaatar to check out all the highlights of the capital.
Naadam is the biggest event in Mongolia, attracting massive crowds. We can expect accommodations and tickets for the festival to be sold in advance. Don’t be left out, book now!
