Of all the regions of the world, the Pacific is probably the one that is the most difficult to get to. We get it, you want to visit the Pacific, you have time on your hands for the summer but can’t afford to fly there every year? This is the combo for you! We have crammed two of our best classic tours of the Pacific into one neat combo which will blow your mind and gives you a summer filled with daily once-in-a-lifetime memories. In this tour, we will visit four of the world’s least visited countries, including the world’s least visited: Nauru and then we head to one of the world’s most vibrant festival – the Mount Hagen Festival to watch the dances and songs of hundreds of tribes.
Our trip starts in the US pseudo-colony of the Marshall Islands, where we check out the capital before checking out the beautiful island of Eneko, which was linked to a fraudulent micronation in the 90s.
After that, we head to Nauru where we will spend the next 5 days but exploring every last inch of the 3rd smallest country in the world until we can catch, well, the next flight. Nauru has recently been made famous by the Australian detention centre, and the continued presence of refugees and YPT get right to the heart of this, with us not only being guided by an asylum seeker but also getting lots of chances to discuss the contemporary situation with them. Nauru is at the heart of the migrant crisis, and our trip gives us a real understanding of it.
Following this, we’ll have two nights and three days in Kiribati, one of the most beautiful and interesting countries in the world. Something that is evident as soon as the plane makes its initial descent. Kiribati was one of the fiercest places for fighting during World War 2, and the shipwrecks, pillboxes, gun turrets, old hospitals and a whole host of other WW2 stuff making a great day tour, before we do a day on an island.
We then head to the 15th least visited country in the world – the Solomon Islands, which lies next to Papua New Guinea. We stay at the Honiara Hotel, which has been visited by the Queen, Prince William, and Princess Kate. Here we enjoy a great day tour full of remnants of the pacific campaign and some wreck diving.
We fly over to the neighbouring country, Papua New Guinea where YPT will be taking full advantage of the festival celebrations allowing you to see the traditional New Guinean life in all its feathered glory. The Mt. Hagen Show, which goes on over the whole weekend, consists of hundreds of tribes from all over the island showcasing their tribe’s traditional dress and dancing.
We will not only spectate the show, but also get opportunities to take part in the daily life of the people of PNG. We’ll attend a school’s culture day and stay in a village for a traditional feast. It doesn’t get more real than that!
After the frenetic pace of our Least Visited Country incursion, we take the time to visit Papua New Guinea, one of the world’s most diverse country, in depth. We will visit more of the highlands provinces stopping by the very seldom visited cities of Goroka and Lae before we catch our flight back to Port Moresby. Other companies will fly you in and out for the festival only, we take you behind the scene, to real PNG.
In Group B, we will be exploring one of YPT’s favourite secret, the island of Bougainville. Bougainville is extremely distinct from mainland Papua, with its own cultures and languages. It is also a land of adventure with not even a proper city around. There, we’ll go thick in the jungle hunting not only abandoned tanks and cannons but also the pride of WWII relics hunter: the planewreck of Admiral Yamamoto. Bougainville is a pristine part of the world with peaceful lodges and incredible snorkelling, which we will partake in fully!
Don’t miss out on this incredible chance to spend a summer going around one of the least explored region of the world!
