Join us on our Kazakhstan Polygon tour as you explore with us the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS), more commonly known as the Polygon Nuclear Test Site.
This former secretive Soviet nuclear testing ground was the place where some of the world’s most dangerous weapons were researched and tested during the Cold War. From its establishment in 1947 until its closure in 1989 hundreds of nuclear detonations occurred here, making it one of the most sombre and scariest places in history.
From Astana – the capital of Kazakhstan, we’ll travel to Semipalatinsk, in Eastern Kazakhstan, once a closed city shrouded in secrecy. After stopping at the Stronger Than Death monument, we’ll visit the nuclear test site museum to learn about its dark history, its impact of the region but also the danger of nuclear weapons as a whole. This will be an essential aspect of the trip to fully understand the implications and purpose of our visit.
Along with the nuclear facilities, we’ll also visit the “ghost town”, which are areas that have been left abandoned due to their proximity to the STS and the environmental contamination resulting from nuclear testing.
Our Polygon tour syncs perfect with our Five Stans tour to make the most out of your Central Asia visit.
