Georgia Soviet Vertigo Tour
Following on from exploring the unrecognised countries of the Caucasus, we take you on our uniquely Soviet Georgia Vertigo tour to explore one of our favourite countries of the old Soviet Union!
We take you urban exploring in real Stalin country, the old mining town of Chiatura, some vertical climbing at Katski’s pillar as well as exploring the abandoned Soviet sanatorium and the not so abandoned Astronomical Observatory.
Between all of this we’ll be taking in the amazing scenery, wonderful local cuisine as well as everything the capital Tbilisi has to offer from the old flea markets to the rustic sulphur baths.
Sunday 13th May – Tbilisi
- Check into downtown hostel, Fabrika Tbilisi, in the heart of an old Soviet sewing factory.
- All day tour where we will explore Tbilisi’s old town, visit to the sulphur bath, cascade area and ride on the cable cars up to the Narikala fortress.
- Afternoon visit to the Georgian Stonehenge with a wonderful view of the city and the Tbilisi Sea (reservoir lake).
- Dinner at a typical Georgian restaurant.
- Overnight at hostel Fabrika Tbilisi.
Monday 14th May – Chiatura
- Up early for breakfast in town.
- Departure to Chiatura by marchroutka (local mini bus).
- Check in into hostel in Chiatura (twin room).
- Afternoon urban exploration of the mining town of Chiatura and ride on Stalin’s last active cable cars. Dinner in town.
- Overnight at hostel in Chiatura.
Tuesday 15th May – Chiatura & Tskalubo
- Breakfast.
- Visit to the Katski pillar’s hermitage.
- Built on the top of an impressive 40 meter tall natural limestone pillar – the lonely Church, which can only be reached by a rusty ladder, is still occupied by a small community of monks.
- Departure for Tskaltubo (mini bus).
- Arrive & check into the historical Tskaltubo spa resort (twin room).
- – Option to visit Prometheus’s cave
- Dinner and drinks at the old soviet sanatorium.
Wednesday 16th May – Tskaltubo & Abastumani
- Up bright and early for breakfast.
- Urban exploration of the old Tskaltubo Soviet sanatorium.
- Visit the Museum “Never back to the USSR”.
- Departure for Abstumani.
- Arrive & check into the once secret Soviet Astronomical Observatory of Abastumani.
- Night excursion of the still used observatory.
- Dinner, drinks and overnight at the observatory.
Thursday 17th May – Abastumani, Borjomi & Tbilisi
- Breakfast before departing for Tbilisi.
- Stop for lunch in Borjormi.
- Option to visit the mineral water spring of Borjormi.
- Arrive and check into hostel Fabrika Tbilisi.
- Dinner at a traditional Georgian restaurant.
- Overnight in Tbilisi.
Friday 18th May – Tbilisi
- Early breakfast.
- All day city tour where we will explore Tbilisi’s biggest bazaar and Soviet flea market!
- Free time before regrouping.
- Farewell dinner at a traditional Georgian restaurant and pub crawl in Tbilisi
- Extra option to enjoy the Georgian traditional sulphur baths
Saturday 19th May – Tbilisi
- End of the tour.
