While Japan might be seen as being well on the tourist trail, there is a whole other deeper, darker and -dare we say- weirder side to the country that we have decided to explore in our Extremes of Japan Tour.
The first extremes we encounter are in Tokyo. Along the Imperial Palace and National Cemetery, we will visit the contentious Yasukuni Shrine, where remains of World War II war criminals are still honoured, and the subsequent military history museum, being equally controversial. Our itinerary is almost as fully packed during the night as it is during the day, and we’ll while taking in the weird and wonderful food and nightlife of the capital – eating fugu fish, visiting the Muscle Girls Bar, downing sake in Golden Gai, or stopping at a proper Fight Club. And of course, no YPT tour would be complete without at least some North Korean element, so we also check out a Pachinko saloon said to have ties with the DPRK.
Following this, we’ll use a combination of cars, buses, and bullet trains to explore the country right until Kyushu, the southernmost of the 4 main Japanese islands. After relaxing at the majestic Mt. Fuji we will be in Osaka, known as the “stomach of Japan” due to its food scene. We’ll check out an old-style grind house movie theatre and pay a visit to one of the most notorious and intriguing Red Light Districts.
We’ll then follow the nuclear-based element of the tour by heading to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, visiting the sites related to the only atomic bombings in history. Here we participate in the internationally renowned Hiroshima Peace Ceremony for the 80th anniversary! Of course, it would not be an Extremes of Japan Tour if we left it at just that, so we’ll also visiting martyr’s cemeteries and bars with over 100 drinks available.
When you put this all together, we feel that our Extremes of Japan Tour is the perfect opportunity for you to explore that weird and wonderful side of Japan, while surrounded by likeminded individuals and Pioneers, all ready to get weird together.
Remark: We plan to begin the trip right at the end of our Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Tour (July 31st-August 1st), where we check out the ghostly remains of the area hit in 2011 by the tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster. This tour is currently in planning and we will update you once available for booking. Click here for reference.
