Join us in Bujumbura the capital city of Burundi where your journey begins, following the footsteps of European explorers David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. You’ll see the monument where history took place with the famous question from Stanley “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” – a pivotal point in history which paved the way for European imperial expansion and colonisation in the region. You’ll get to experience the impressive Gishora drummer’s and visit their village and learn about their cultural importance in the region.
Your journey continues into the “Singapore of Africa” when you cross over to Rwanda, into the capital Kigali. Despite its troubled and unfortunate past, this jewel of a country is at the forefront of progression and development which really reflects on the warmth and hospitality you will receive. Our adventure takes you deep into a tropical forest to find the troop of mighty silverback gorillas in their natural habitat for a genuine close and personal encounter (extra fee). You’ll get to experience the beautiful city of Karongi which lies on the shores of the beautiful Lake Kivu. Another key aspect of your journey will be visiting the Pygmy village in Kinigi, seeing how they practice their traditional way of life.
Time for a change of scenery. You’ll see It’s also a nice break to rest before continuing deeper into East Africa!
Next step of your adventure, we’ll be heading towards Uganda. We’ll celebrate crossing the equator by foot, a key moment for any traveller! Your next few days will be at the beautiful reserve of Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) where we’ll take our chances of seeing the Big Five!
Winston Churchill once described Uganda as “the Pearl of Africa” for its stunning beauty, various wildlife and diversity. We’ll dive deep into its post-colonial rule, visiting the former palace of one of the most brutal dictators, Idi Amin’s (often referred to as the “butcher of Uganda”) and seeing his personal torture chambers.
Covering the best of East Africa, this tour is truly unique. Unlike many others, it combines meeting indigenous people with the opportunity to trek deep into the forest to see the mighty silverback gorillas as well as encountering the Big 5: leopards, lions, rhinos, buffalo and elephants! Highly sought after with limited spaces, this is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed!

Optional Activity: Mountain Gorilla Trekking (extra cost, $1000). For those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience, embark on an unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure. Accompanied by expert guides and park rangers, you’ll trek through the dense bamboo forests in search of one of Rwanda’s habituated gorilla families. Once you find them, you’ll spend a magical hour observing these gentle giants as they go about their daily lives, playing, foraging, and interacting with their young. The trek can range from a few hours to a full day, depending on the gorillas’ location.
Alternative Activities for Non-Trekkers:
If you are not trekking, you will visit the Burera and Ruhondo twin lakes, formed by ancient volcanic activity. Take in the breathtaking views, spot local fishermen in their traditional wooden canoes, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this hidden gem.
Then, you’ll gain insight into the traditions and way of life of one of Rwanda’s indigenous groups, the Batwa (Pygmy) community in Kinigi. The Batwa were the original forest dwellers of this region and have a deep connection to the land. During the visit, learn about their history, storytelling traditions, hunting techniques, and how they have adapted to modern Rwandan society.
You’ll also visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, now known as the Gorilla Guardians Village. This community-led initiative showcases Rwandan traditions, music, dance, and history while providing former poachers with sustainable livelihoods through cultural tourism.
