Eritrea is a fascinating country which falls well below most traveller’s radars thus making it one of our favourite countries to visit! Eritrea boasts a pristine coastline and untouched Red Sea islands as well as some of the best-kept colonial architecture in Africa. On top of all that we’ll take part in the largest festival of the year to celebrate Eritrea’s independence!
Having been colonized in part by the Turks and Egyptians, Eritrea took on a European flavor with the arrival of the Italians in 1885 during their belated entry in the “scramble for Africa”. The legacies of successive foreign forces, combined with a rich mix of nine local ethnic groups, have created a diverse cultural landscape that offers the best of African, Middle Eastern and European influences.
The Eritrean capital city of Asmara is like a film set from an early Italian movie, with vintage Italian coffee machines and outstanding examples of Art-Deco architecture. Although the country faces numerous hardships, it paradoxically remains one of Africa’s most peaceful, secure, and welcoming destinations.
You’ll experience the city of Keren – the second largest city in Eritrea. Situated at the foot of the scenic Keren Mountains, the city is known for its striking landscape, with rolling hills and fertile valleys. Keren played a significant role in Eritrea’s struggle for independence, with historical sites and monuments commemorating the sacrifices made during the armed conflict.
Massawa was the former capital and the current strategical trading hub of the country. Here we’ll set sail to Green Island and explore a nearby wreck, explore the old buildings built way back during the Egyptian and Ottoman days – including the former winter residence of Emperor Haile Selassie, see scars leftover by the war, and stay overnight in a hotel reminiscent of the era of the Italians.
