Nagasaki might not be the largest city in Japan, but it certainly packs a punch when it comes to nightlife. While we were there to commemorate the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, we also explored the city’s vibrant after-dark scene, and Tatanbaa stood out as a true gem.
This bar, a standing-room-only establishment, perfectly encapsulates the unique drinking culture that Japan is famous for.
What’s a Standing Bar?
Tatanbaa is part of a broader trend in Japan, especially in Nagasaki, where patrons stand to enjoy their drinks rather than sit. This concept isn’t just about practicality—packing more people into a small space—but it’s also a cultural phenomenon.
After work, locals flock to these bars for a quick drink before heading home, creating a lively atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. The standing format encourages mingling, and it’s not uncommon to find yourself in conversation with strangers, which is exactly what happened to me.
Why Tatanbaa Stands Out (no pun intended)
During my time in Nagasaki, I found myself returning to Tatanbaa multiple times. Sure, I’m a creature of habit, but there was something special about this place that kept drawing me back. Maybe it was the eclectic drink menu, which included everything from sake to highballs, or perhaps it was the friendly vibe that permeated the bar. Unlike in Tokyo, where people can be more reserved, the locals in Nagasaki were warm and eager to chat. On one of my visits, two local patrons explained that this friendliness is a hallmark of Nagasaki’s culture—a fact I quickly came to appreciate.
How Tatanbaa’s Payment System Works
One of the quirkiest aspects of Tatanbaa is its payment system. When you enter, you’re given a bowl in which you place money, say ¥5,000. As you order drinks, the bartender takes the necessary amount and returns your change to the bowl.
It’s a fun twist on the usual way of paying and makes ordering rounds feel almost like a game. Plus, with drinks averaging around ¥300-¥400, the night can get wonderfully indulgent without breaking the bank.
So, how good is it?
Though I explored other bars in Nagasaki, Tatanbaa easily ranks as my favorite. The combination of great drinks, a welcoming atmosphere, and the unique standing bar culture makes it a must-visit if you ever find yourself in this historic city.
