Salar de Uyuni is one of the most breathtaking and otherworldly destinations on Earth, located in the Andes Mountains of south-western Bolivia. It is the world’s largest salt flat, covering over 10,000 square kilometres (nearly 4,000 square miles), and it is an absolute must-visit for any adventurer or nature enthusiast.
Salar in Spanish means “Salt Flat”, whilst Uyuni is the name of the closest town where most people start their visit to the salt flats. Uyuni from the Aymara language means “enclosure”. Therefore Salar de Uyuni is translated as, “salt flat with enclosures” [The Aymara is a local culture that lives in the Andean high countries, a plateau known as Altiplano. With a populace of around 3,000,000, they live around Bolivia, Southern Peru, and, Northern Chile].
