Turks and Caicos has experienced a quite literal explosion in tourism in recent years. In the first five months of 2024, the islands reported a 10.85% increase in air arrivals compared to the same period in 2023, with March alone witnessing a record 77,559 arrivals—a 15.57% rise over March 2023.
This growth follows a successful 2023, during which the destination welcomed over 1.5 million visitors.
But we would be remiss not to mention that alongside the tourism boom, the territory has faced challenges in public safety. We don’t want to mire the touristic delight that is Turks and Caicos, however, by September 2024, Turks and Caicos recorded 32 violent crimes. Let’s make this clear – the destination is not unsafe, only that travellers should have some consideration for their safety.
In order to make sure that you get the most out of your Turks and Caicos vacation we have decided to put together this safety guide for ease of mind.
Practical Safety Tips for a Secure and Enjoyable Turks and Caicos Experience
Turks and Caicos Islands offer travelers quite a nice package – luxury, adventure, and natural beauty. The only thing more a happy traveller would need is safety. As always the general idea of safety is valid here – be well-informed and prepared. Below you’ll find advice and general safety ideas for your safety in Turks and Caicos..
Staying At A Resort
The very best Turks and Caicos resorts have achieved fame for their exceptional service and amenities, offering guests a comfortable, and more to the point, safe environment. However, here are some tips for safety even in the resort:
- Secure Your Valuables: The safe is there for your peace of mind so use it. You can just throw your passport and other important things in and spare them not a thought more. This should go without saying, but avoid leaving valuables unattended in public areas or on the beach.
- Familiarize Yourself with Resort Policies:Literally no one wants to do this, but it’s a good idea to know where the emergency exit is. It’s boring, we know, but never say never.
- Stay Within Resort Grounds at Night: While the islands are generally safe, it’s best to stay within the resort premises after dark. The sad truth is you would do this pretty much anywhere, and you need to do this on vacation too.
- Use Resort-Approved Transportation: Resorts will generally have transportation for off-property excursions, and it’s best to just use those. If you want to be your own driver we’ll cover that later on.
- Monitor Alcohol Consumption: Enjoy the local beverages, but do so responsibly. Overindulgence can impair judgment and increase vulnerability.
Exploring Beyond The Resort
Venturing outside the resort is a big topic, and though we mentioned it before it merits more attention. To do so safely, keep these considerations in mind::
- Research Your Destinations: Before setting out, research the areas you plan to visit. Some regions, particularly in Providenciales, have higher crime rates. Staying informed helps you avoid potential hotspots.
- Travel in Groups: Exploring with friends and family can deter potential threats and provide assistance if needed.
- Avoid Isolated Areas: Stick to the trodden path, especially after dusk. Beaches and secluded spots are adventurous but can be risky at night.
- Stay Connected: It’s not like you could go anywhere without your phone in this day and age but still, make sure it’s changed. Share your plans for the day with someone you trust and check in regularly. We know this sounds a bit paranoid for a vacation, but it can be a life saver.
- Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi: Don’t make any big transactions on public WI-Fi. Your personal information may be at stake and it’s best to save that for after the vacation or when you’re in your room.
Transportation Safety
Navigating the islands requires some attention for a smooth experience:
- Driving Considerations: In Turks and Caicos, driving is on the left side of the road, which will probably be a major adjustment though likely the only one..
- Vehicle Rentals: Make sure you rent a car from a trusted company. As always, inspect the vehicle before you actually rent it
- Taxi Services: Use only licensed taxis. It;s always a good ide to ask for an approximate price of the fare before starting your journey.
- Public Transportation: Be aware that public transportation options are limited. Plan your travel accordingly to avoid being stranded.
Health And Wellness
Maintaining your health is crucial for an uninterrupted vacation:
- Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate is known for leading to dehydration. Drink plenty of bottled water throughout the day, probably more than you usually do.
- Sun Protection: A high-SPF is a must, don’t even think about going without it. Also wear hats, and use sunglasses to protect against UV rays.
- Food and Water Safety: While resort dining is generally safe, exercise caution when eating elsewhere. Ensure food is thoroughly cooked and opt for bottled beverages.
- Medical Facilities: Resorts will probably have a medical facility on premises. If you’re not in a resort then you can check those online. Keep a basic first-aid kit handy for minor ailments.
Emergency Preparedness
Being prepared for emergencies enhances your safety:
- Know Emergency Numbers: In Turks and Caicos, dial 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies – standard for the US so no adjustments there.
- Travel Insurance: Who travels without travel insurance? No one, that’s who and you shouldn’t either. Get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuations (if you’re wondering why an evacuation check the next point), and trip cancellations.
- Natural Disasters: Hurricane season is from June to November and this is something to be very much aware of. Weather forecasts and a contingency plan will be your best friends.
- Local Laws and Customs: Respect local regulations and cultural norms to avoid legal issues. For instance, public nudity is prohibited, and drug offenses are treated severely.
Endnote
Turks and Caicos really offer a lot in terms of cultural rest and relaxation. While we attempted to make sure we cover everything that could go wrong please don’t dwell on it too much.
The point of a good vacation is that you actually get some relaxation and don’t worry.
