North Macedonia Tours and Travel

YPT Tours to North Macedonia

Our North Macedonia tours are unique and the gateway to many other interesting countries. Nestled in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, North Macedonia is a captivating destination that offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. This Balkan gem, formerly known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), is a land where ancient traditions blend harmoniously with the modern world, making it an intriguing place to explore. From its diverse geography to its fascinating history, thriving economy, and unique blend of religions, North Macedonia is a destination that should be on every traveller’s radar.

North Macedonia is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west, is a landlocked country that spans approximately 25,000 square kilometres. Its diverse geography includes lush valleys, picturesque lakes, and towering mountain ranges. Lake Ohrid, one of its most famous natural wonders, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe.

North Macedonia boasts a rich and complex history that spans thousands of years. The region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and has seen the rise and fall of various empires, including the Roman and Ottoman Empires. It was here that Alexander the Great was born. In the modern era, the country was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until it gained independence in 1991.

You’ll see that the Balkans are rich with history, diversity, culture and beautiful scenery. It is more than a region haunted by Nazi occupation and concentration camps, with decaying and forgotten spomeniks (monuments) scattered around.

The end of the Second World War saw the former Yugoslavia develop and progress under the grip of Josip Broz Tito, renowned for his military tactics against the Axis occupation and his hard stance against Stalin. But peace didn’t last in the region, with the death of Tito followed by the economic failure shattering the framework that kept Yugoslavia united. It led to war, with many wishing to create their own nations. Fuelled by nationalism and ethnic tension, the collapse of Yugoslavia saw the deadliest war in Europe since WWII, with thousands of war crimes and crimes against humanity still under investigation.

North Macedonia is but one of seven countries of former Yugoslavia, each unique despite their shared history, where you’ll meet genuine people and learn and about their language, cultures, and political views. A mixture of ancient and modern history through times of peace and conflicts makes this a truly unique place to visit.
