Chilling at Namuai Island, Samoa

Samoa isn’t typically a place where we spend too much time, but on this trip, we had the chance to dig a little deeper—and that led us to the stunning Namuai Island.

While it takes some effort to get there, the journey is half the adventure, and the destination doesn’t disappoint.

What Is Namuai Island?

Namuai Island is a small, uninhabited gem located off the southeastern coast of Upolu, Samoa. Just a few hundred meters across, it’s surrounded by pristine blue waters and coral reefs, making it a favorite for day-trippers. A short boat ride from the village of Lalomanu gets you there, where you’ll find peace and quiet away from the busier mainland beaches.

However, getting to Lalomanu itself involves a 90-minute drive from Apia, the capital of Samoa. The journey, often aboard a lively Samoan bus (or as we call it, the “Samoan Vengabus”), offers a scenic tour of the island’s lush countryside.

What to Do on Namuai Island

Despite being officially uninhabited, Namuai Island has a few basic facilities. There are simple buildings, toilets, and covered areas where you can relax, change, or even stay overnight. A caretaker is on hand to assist with “whatever you need,” though don’t expect a full-service bar or restaurant. Fresh coconuts are available for a modest fee, but it’s wise to bring your own provisions.

The main draw here is the natural beauty. Swimming and snorkeling are the highlights, though you’ll need to bring your own gear. While marine life isn’t abundant, you can spot starfish, stingrays, and even turtles if you’re lucky. It’s a slice of paradise, perfect for a laid-back day of exploration—or recovering from Apia’s nightlife, as we discovered!
