Ingushetia, officially known as the Republic of Ingushetia. The republic is located in the North Caucasus and is part of the North Caucasian Federal District, one of eight federal districts of the Russian Federation.

The Republic of Ingushetia shares its West and North border with North Ossetia and Chechnya to its Northeast, both republics of the Russian Federation. The southern border is shared with Georgia a former republic of the Soviet Union. The largest capital of Ingushetia is Magas while the largest city is Nazran.

Geography of the Republic of Ingushetia

The Republics is located in the Caucasus, famous for its mountainous terrain the highest point is at the Gora Shan, with its peak at 4451m at Mount Shani which is shared with Georgia. The three major rivers include Terek, Assa, and Sunzha, where the water ultimately flows into the Caspian Sea.

Administrative and municipal divisions of Ingushetia

Ingushetia’s administrative and political centre is Magas. Four main administrative districts are vital for the governance and organisation of the republic. Alongside the districts, there are five cities (including the capital) under the republic’s jurisdiction.

The following administrative and municipal divisions of Ingushetia are Magas, Nazran, Malgobek, Karabulak, and Sunzha. The four districts are Nazranovsky, Sunzhensky, Dzheyrakhsky, and Malgobeksky.

Magas (Capital City)

The capital city of the Republic is Magas was founded in 1995 and replaced Nazran in 2002 as the capital city. Magas also has the record of being the smallest capital of Russia’s federal subjects.

At the time of writing, Magas has under 10,000 inhabitants. The city’s name derives from the Persian word Magas or Makas, meaning “fly”. The flag and coat of arms of Magas reflect this by displaying a bird.

Nazranovsky District

The district is located in the central and western parts of Ingushetia. The administrative centre is Nazran, which is not part of the district in terms of administration. The district has a population of over 85,000, which is the highest population density in the republic. Nazranovsky District relies on small-scale industries, agriculture, and trade. Its location also allows it to be a major transport hub.

Sunzhensky District

Sunzhensky District administrate centre is Sunzha. The district is located in the eastern and central parts of the republic. The district alongside Malgobeksky District has border issues with Chechnya. Sunzhensky relies on its fertile plains for agriculture which is vital for its economy.

Dzheyrakhsky District

The major settlements of the district are Armkhi and Dzheyrakh which is also the administrative centre. Dzheyrakhsky is renowned for its mountainous terrain, which is considered some of the most beautiful in the North Caucasus. The economy thrives on tourism, as the district contains UNESCO World Heritage sites including medieval watchtowers and ancient Christian churches.

Malgobeksky District

The administrative centre is Malgobek, which is not part of the district in terms of administration. Malgobek has the title of “Hero City” for its contribution and resistance during the Great Patriotic War. During the Soviet era, the district was vital for oil extraction, the economy still relies on energy. The population is under 50,000, with the majority living in Malgobek.
