Map of Adygea – Republic of Adygea

Adygea, officially known as the Republic of Adygea or the Adygean Republic, is a federal subject of the Russian Federation. It is surrounded by Krasnodar Krai, an enclave within Russia’s Southern Federal District. Adygea is located in the North Caucasus.

The largest and capital city is Maykop. Located northwest of the capital, Adygeysk has administrative and municipal status. The republic’s official language is Adyghe and Russian.

Administrative and municipal divisions of Adygea

Adygea is divided into seven districts (Giaginsky, Koshekhablsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Maykopsky, Takhtamukaysky, Teuchezhsky, and Shovgenovsky) and two cities (Maykop and Adygea).

Giaginsky District

With the administrative center being Giaginskaya, the district has a population of approximately 32,000 people. Most of the population lives in Giaginskaya and Dondukovskaya. The district is renowned for farming due to its mostly flat terrain and fertile soil. With its mild climate, it’s ideal for a variety of crops.

The district is rich in Adyghe culture and reflects their heritage through traditional music and dances during celebrations and festivals.

Koshekhablsky District

The administrative center is Koshekhabl, also a major settlement alongside Karmovo and Pshicho. The district economy thrives from agriculture and has a small number of manufacturing facilities. The district also has ongoing archaeological digs which have uncovered artifacts and sites from the early Adyghe civilization.

Krasnogvardeysky District

The district has approximately 25,000 with the majority living in the administrative centre Krasnogvardeyskoye and the second most populaces being Ulyap. The district’s main source of income is from cattle, dairy farming, and agriculture. The open-air museum in Ulyap proudly displays Adyghe culture and heritage.

Maykopsky District

The district surrounds the capital Maykop, which administrates itself. The district has a population of around 58,000 people with Tulsky, Kamennomostsky, and Krasnooktyabrsky having the most. There are a number of beautiful hiking routes in and around Khajokh Gorge and Rufabgo Waterfalls. Water activities along the Belaya River are popular.

Takhtamukaysky District

The district is a popular transit hub being well connected with Krasnodar Krai. There are highways to Krasnodar International Airport which serves the neighbouring region. The administrative center is Takhtamukay, which also has the most population alongside Enem and Yablonovsky. The demographic is a mixture of Adyghe and Russian, which also influences the culture.

Teuchezhsky District

With a population of approximately 20,000 people with many of the population living in the administrative centre Ponezhukay and Tlyustenkhabl. The economy is influenced by the Krasnodar Reservoir which supports fishing and water for agriculture.

Shovgenovsky District

With a population of 14,000, it is the least populated district. The majority of the population resides in the administrative capital Khakurinokhabl, with Vakozhsky and Dukmasov having a large number of residents. The district is famous for its traditional beekeeping methods and Adyghe textiles. The main source of income is agriculture such as livestock and farming.

Maykop

The largest and capital city of the Republic of Adygea has a population of approximately 143,385. The city features many highlights including the Maykop Train Station, Maykop Grand Mosque, Maykop Brewery, and State Philharmonic of Adygea which houses a beautiful Soviet mosaic of Sosruko.

The capital is also a great place to try Adyghe cuisines from traditional restaurants, something our group and private tours enjoy.

Adygeysk

Located 100km northwest of Maykop, the town alongside the capital has administrative and municipal status. Having close proximity to the Krasnodar Reservoir, the economy focuses on fishing, and agriculture and has small manufacturing facilities.

Our group tours through the North Caucasus include Adygea, focusing on Adyghe’s cultural heritage and its Soviet influence. Why not join us in this very un-touristy republic which includes Chechnya, Ossetia, and much more!
