Historically, the Kingdom of Lithuania, Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth head significant power and influence over the region, an identity found in literature, art and language. 

However, larger neighbors wanted influence and Lithuania fell prey to the Russian Empire, followed by the Soviets, the Nazis, then Soviets again with a brief independence between after WWI. The Lithuanian strong identity, which pushed for independence from the Soviets, influenced other republics to do the same.

Lithuania boast incredibly history spanning from the 9th century to break up of the Soviet Union. Travelling with YPT, you’ll not only discover this multi-layered history, but also the beautiful scenery, gastronomy, and most importantly the people of Lithuania.

GROUP TOURS TO LITHUANIA

Currently, YPT offers one yearly group tour to Lithuania, in combination with Latvia and Estonia: the aptly-named Soviet Baltics Tour. The 8-day tour is packed full of adventures, including Stalin’s World (Grūtas Park), Ninth Fort, Hill of Crosses and The Republic of Užupis, a micronation with its own constitution.

INDEPENDENT TOURS TO LITHUANIA

Lithuania and the Baltic States have always been a favourite for YPT, not only for their complex history but also for their cultural identity which is perfect to experience on independent and bespoke Lithuania tours. Prices depend on the number of people and what level of accommodation you desire, but YPT can arrange everything you need for perfect independent Lithuania tours.

As Lithuania is located below Latvia and Estonia, it is a perfect place to explore the entire Baltics. It’s also possible to extend your tour into Kaliningrad (Russia) and/or Belarus.

Example of a Lithuania Itinerary (4 days)

Day 1 – Vilnius, Lithuania

  • Arrive at your own leisure into Vilnius. The capital city of Lithuania is well connected with many European countries. 
  • We’ll head out to explore Vilnius communist era architecture. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Lithuanians wanted to discard the reminders of their occupiers. However, there are a number of beautiful brutalist architecture located around the capital which you can appreciate. 
  • We grab a coffee along our communist architecture era walking tour. 

Afternoon

  • Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights -Informally known as the KGB museum. The building was the headquarters for the Gestapo during Nazi occupation, then KGB HQ after WWII. Over 1000 dissidents were executed by the KGB in the basement. 
  • Dinner in Vilnius at our favourite restaurant, which serves traditional meals. We recommend trying the boiled pig’s ears with peas and zeppelin. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes also. 
  • You’ll have some time to explore old town. Some bars serve amazing locally brewed beers.
  • Overnight stay in Vilnius.

 Day 2 – Vilnius 

  • Breakfast at hotel and we’ll depart at 8:00am.
  • We’ll take the scenic journey towards the Belarusian border. We’ll make stops along the way to stretch our legs and enjoy the heavily forested scenery. 
  • Once we reach Grūtas Park, unofficially known as Stalin’s World – we’ll have time to explore the grounds. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many former republics destroyed/sold their Soviet era monuments. However, one businessman decided to save the monuments in Lithuania. There are only 3 Soviet monument parks in the European Union, with this one being the largest.
  • After exploring the park, museum and zoo we’ll have lunch. 

Afternoon

  • Return to Vilnius making necessary rests stops along the way. 
  • On arrival we’ll meet our local guide who show us around old town and micro nation Užupis which means “beyond the river” in Lithuanian. The district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis) in 1998. You can request for your passport to be stamped the coat of arms of the republic here.
  • Continuing exploring the city where you may purchase gifts at the markets and capture some pictures around old town. 
  • We’ll make our way to the impressive Vilnius TV Tower, a fine example of Soviet innovation. We’ll ascend to the tallest building in Lithuania for evening dinner and drinks.
  • Overnight stay in Vilnius. 

Day 3 – Vilnius – Kaunas 

  • Breakfast at hotel, check out and depart at 8:30am.
  • We start our journey heading to Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania and arguably the most beautiful. We’ll make stops along the way to pick up supplies.
  • On our arrival we’ll explore Kaunas old town and grab a coffee before we head to the Ninth Fort memorial. This powerful memorial is dedicated to the 45,000 Jews massacred at this site during the Nazi Germany occupation. 
  • Onwards to Riga, we’ll make a couple of stops to stretch our legs and enjoy the natural scenery.
  • Next, we’ll visit the Hill of Crosses – a pilgrimage site since 1831. The site gained more purpose during the Soviet occupation as a symbol of independence resulting to it being destroyed a number of times. However, Lithuanians kept placing crosses on the hill as a move to defy the Soviets. Today, there’s over 100,000 crosses, with pilgrims coming from all over the world.   

Afternoon

  • Return to Kaunas to explore the historical old town, which includes Kaunas Castle, House of Perkūnas, and the Church of St. Francis Xavier.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Kaunas.

Day 4 – Kaunas – Vilnius 

  • Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Vilnius. Alternatively continue onwards to Riga and Estonia to visit all the Baltic States.

There are a number of transport links between Vilnius and Minsk. We can provide the necessary paperwork and visa to enter Belarus from Lithuania. 

Vilnius to Kaliningrad (Russia) tours

The Russian exclave is located between Vilnius and Poland making a great link to discover the Baltic region. We can create bespoke tour starting in Vilnius, taking in Kaliningrad and Poland.

The capital city has many brutalist buildings from the Soviet era. These bespoke Soviet architecture tours are best done by walking throughout the city highlighting their former and current use.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVEL TO LITHUANIA

Lithuania is part of the Schengen Area, which consists of 25 EU member states. Nationals of 63 countries and territories holding ordinary passports may enter the Schengen Area for short stays (usually 90 days within any 180-day period). That includes the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, etc.
Vilnius International Airport is well connected with Europe and the Middle East. There are frequent low budget airlines operating. Lithuania is easy to travel to by land from Latvia and Estonia.
Lithuania is a very safe country. Like in any other city, avoid displaying your passport, large sums of cash and valuables. Always be cautious of your belongings in busy areas in Vilnius and Kaunas.
Lithuania offers a wide range of dishes which can cater for vegetarians and vegan. Although in rural areas, options are more limited and usually consist of soups and side dishes.
The main language is Lithuania. English is well spoken by the younger generation and Russian by the older residents. It’s not uncommon to hear Ukrainian.
The official currency used in Lithuania is the Euro (EUR). ATMs are easily available throughout the country and credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops and bars/cafes.
We do strongly recommend that travellers to all our destinations have travel insurance. Accidents or medical conditions can happen anywhere and it’s best to be prepared. A proper travel insurance should include coverage for (medical) evacuation/repatriation costs by helicopter, plane or ship.
