Example of a Liberia Itinerary (6 days)
Day 1 – Arrival in Monrovia
- Your guide will meet you upon arrival at Roberts International Airport (ROB). The drive to Monrovia takes approximately 2 hours.
- Check in at your hotel.
- Depending on arrival time, take an optional short evening stroll along Monrovia’s coastline or visit a local bar for a first taste of Liberian cuisine and Club Beer.
Day 2 – Monrovia
- After breakfast, start your city tour with a visit to the Ducor Palace Hotel, the ruined luxury hotel with stunning city views; the monument of Liberia’s first president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts; the historic Monrovia Lighthouse overseeing the Atlantic Ocean.
- You’ll also visit the National Museum of Liberia, showcasing the country’s rich history and artifacts.
- After a stop at the Centennial Pavilion, a significant venue for Liberia’s independence celebrations, you’ll explore the First Baptist Church, where Liberia’s Declaration of Independence was signed.
- Lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional Liberian dishes.
Afternoon
- After lunch, you’ll head to Providence Island, where freed African Americans first settled in Liberia.
- You’ll also visit Waterside Market, one of Liberia’s oldest markets.
- You’ll then head to West Point, the largest slum community in Monrovia, for a deeper understanding of urban life.
- Dinner and overnight in Monrovia
Day 3 – Buchanan and Edina
- Early departure (8 AM) for Buchanan, Liberia’s third-largest city, known for its beaches and colonial history.
- Stop at Edina, one of Liberia’s oldest settlements and home to Liberia’s 12th president, Joseph James Cheeseman.
- Explore Edina’s historical sites and learn about its role in Liberia’s early history.
Afternoon
- After lunch, you’ll take a boat ride back to Buchanan, where you will visit the iron ore train station, a remnant of Liberia’s industrial past.
- You’ll also enjoy Sunset Beach, a beautiful coastal retreat with golden sands and crashing waves.
- Dinner and overnight in Buchanan
Day 4 – Buchanan and Sapo National Park
- Morning departure from Buchanan with a stop at the Firestone Rubber Plantation, one of the world’s largest rubber farms. You’ll learn about the rubber harvesting process and its impact on Liberia’s economy.
- Continue the long but scenic drive (approximately 6-7 hours) to Sapo National Park, Liberia’s largest and most pristine rainforest.
- Stop for lunch in Zwedru, a major town near the park.
- Arrive at Jalay’s Town, the park’s main entry point, and take a boat ride across the Sinoe River to access the park interior.
- Settle into the park lodge or campsite and enjoy a first short trek into the jungle.
- Dinner by the fire and an optional night walk to spot nocturnal wildlife like bush babies and tree pangolins.
Day 5 – Sapo National Park
- Early morning trek to maximize chances of spotting rare wildlife, including the elusive pygmy hippopotamus in hidden waterways; forest elephants, duiker antelopes, and various primates. You’ll also see a stunning variety of exotic birds and butterflies.
- During your trek, you’ll learn traditional forest survival skills from local guides.
- Return to camp for breakfast in nature, followed by further exploration.
- Enjoy a picnic lunch before hiking back to Jalay’s Town.
Afternoon
- Afternoon drive back toward Monrovia, stopping in Greenville for a coastal viewpoint break.
- Arrive in Monrovia in the evening and unwind at a beachside bar or restaurant.
- Dinner and overnight in Monrovia
Day 6: Monrovia
- Transfer to Roberts International Airport for your flight home, concluding your incredible Liberia adventure.
- If you have time, you can also do a day trip to Marshall Monkey Island, a sanctuary where rescued chimpanzees roam free on river islands.
