The Flag of Bangladesh – Simplistic yet Iconic

The flag of Bangladesh is distinctive and notably atypical compared to many other national flags. Some observers have pointed out its resemblance to the flag of Japan, and there is some merit to this observation, particularly due to the red circle at its centre.

However, the flag of Bangladesh features this red circle on a green background, creating a striking contrast. While visually simple, the flag carries a rich and profound history, symbolising the country’s struggles, its cultural identity, and the sacrifices made during the liberation movement. Its unique design reflects not only the nation’s aesthetic choices but also its deep historical and political significance.

When was the flag of Bangladesh adopted?

The flag of Bangladesh was officially adopted on January 17, 1972, shortly after the nation gained independence. Its design evolved from a similar flag used during the Bangladesh Liberation War, when the country, then known as East Pakistan, fought for its freedom in 1971. The earlier version featured a red circle with a golden outline of the country in its centre, symbolizing Bangladesh’s identity and unity. However, the map was later removed to simplify the flag’s design and ensure it could be reproduced accurately.

Since its adoption, specific proportions of the red circle, as well as the shades of red and green, have been codified into law to standardise its production. The flag is commonly referred to as “the red and green,” reflecting its vibrant colours that hold deep significance for the Bangladeshi people. The green represents the country’s lush landscape and youth, while the red symbolizes the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for independence.

Who designed the Bangladeshi flag?

The original design of the Bangladeshi flag was created by a group of dedicated students and activists from Dhaka University. This group, deeply committed to the cause of independence, worked collaboratively to craft a symbol that would embody the aspirations and struggles of the Bengali people.

Their design reflected the vision of a free and united Bangladesh, with elements carefully chosen to represent the land’s natural beauty and the sacrifices made during the fight for liberation. This grassroots effort by young visionaries laid the foundation for what would become the national flag of an independent Bangladesh.

What does the flag of Bangladesh mean?

The meaning behind the flag of Bangladesh is both simple and deeply symbolic. The red circle at its centre represents either the rising sun, akin to the symbolism of Japan’s flag, or the blood of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the green background signifies the country’s lush natural beauty, including its vibrant flora and fauna, and pays homage to its renowned natural heritage, such as the Sundarbans—the world’s largest mangrove forest. Together, these elements reflect the resilience, hope, and natural splendour of Bangladesh.

Who flies the Bangladesh flag?

In Bangladesh, it is mandatory for certain high-ranking officials to display the national flag above their residences. This includes the Speaker of Parliament, the President, and the Prime Minister, who are all required to fly the flag as a symbol of their official status and commitment to the nation.

The flag is also flown at half-mast on designated occasions, such as periods of national mourning or observances like National Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Dibosh), now also known as International Mother Language Day. The government may also declare additional occasions for this solemn display.

Notably, the flag achieved global recognition on 16th December 2013, when over 27,000 people gathered to form the world’s largest human flag, setting a Guinness World Record. This extraordinary event, held on Victory Day, remains a testament to the unity and pride of the Bangladeshi people.
