Ecuador Travel Update – May 2024

On Wednesday, May 22nd, the Ecuadorean president, Daniel Noboa, declared a new state of emergency for seven of the country´s provinces. This measure follows the increasing violent incidents associated with criminal gangs and drug trafficking through the country.

What does this mean for visitors though? We provide you with an Ecuador travel update here.

What is happening in Ecuador?

There has been a surge in violence in Ecuador amid the government’s ongoing “war” on drug gangs. To fight back more effectively, the government has implemented the measure of declaring a partial state of emergency in several provinces multiple times since the beginning of this year.

The new decree will be in effect for 60 days in Guayas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Manabi, Sucumbios, Orellana and Los Rios provinces.

Not to be taken lightly, this situation still leaves the regions around Quito, Cuenca, Baños, and big parts of the Amazon rainforest in relative calm. Also many of the popular mountains along the ‘Avenue of Volcanoes‘ are still to be visited, such as the Cotopaxi or Cayambe.

What is our take on the Ecuador Travel Update

We’re observing the situation closely and so far can state, that under the right circumstances and with the right precautions, tours and visits are still considered feasible. The following is advised:

  • Consider the regions and provinces to travel to and stick to the more north-eastern parts in the interior of Ecuador. Try to avoid the coastal regions and the city of Guayaquil (as shown by the FCDO UK).
  • Travel larger distances by day, e.g. when taking transportation to a new destination.
  • Avoid larger crowds and protests, as they tend to get violent quickly.

We are in constant exchange with our local partners as well as befriended travellers on the ground and are assessing external resources. Thus, we will keep you up to date here and can advise on safety.
