FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVEL TO XINJIANG

No, you do not need a permit to visit Xinjiang. Unlike Tibet, Xinjiang allows free movement for visitors. While major cities like Urumqi are easy to navigate, smaller towns near borders or south of the Taklamakan Desert may attract police attention. Some towns may not host foreigners overnight, but day trips are usually acceptable. Compliance with police instructions is necessary, but knowing some Chinese can be helpful in such situations.
While Xinjiang may have a visible police presence and a history of security challenges, with proper precautions and respect for local customs, it can be safe to travel there. Exercise standard tourist safety measures, avoid flaunting valuables in crowded areas, and be culturally sensitive, particularly in Muslim regions. Engaging with the friendly and curious Uyghur population can lead to memorable experiences, such as being invited to a Uyghur wedding while exploring the old town streets. Stay informed, be respectful, and use common sense for a rewarding trip to Xinjiang.
Xinjiang cuisine is predominantly meat-based, but vegetarian and vegan options can be found in larger cities and tourist areas. Restaurants in urban areas like Urumqi offer dishes with vegetables, tofu, noodles, and rice. In more rural areas, options may be limited.
The major telecom operators in China, and therefore also Xinjiang, are China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. Each offers various prepaid and postpaid plans. You can buy SIM cards at major international airports, retail, or convenience stores. You will need your passport for identification and registration purposes due to government regulations. Note that some international websites and services are restricted. If you need access to these, consider setting up a VPN before your arrival. If you arrive without SIM card in Urumqi, you can find the stores in the city centre as well.
The currency in Xinjiang is the Renminbi (RMB), which is also commonly referred to as the Chinese Yuan (CNY). The primary unit of the Renminbi is the yuan, and its symbol is ¥.
We do strongly recommend that travellers to all our destinations have travel insurance. Accidents or medical conditions can happen anywhere and it’s best to be prepared. A proper travel insurance should include coverage for (medical) evacuation/repatriation costs by helicopter, plane or ship.

You should always do your own research about insurance, but we at YPT use IATI. Using our referral link below will give you a 5% discount off their usual price: https://www.iatitravelinsurance.com/en/?r=23612524710385
