He encouraged them to return to their ancestral customs, promising that he would one day bring them wealth, cargo, and freedom.

The arrival of American troops in Vanuatu brought an unprecedented influx of cargo—jeeps, radios, canned food, and other goods—that seemed miraculous to the islanders. To the people of Tanna, these items confirmed John Frum’s promises.
U.S. soldiers were seen as divine emissaries, and their departure at the end of the war left a void. Followers of John Frum began rituals to summon the return of cargo, constructing airstrips, raising American flags, and even marching in military-style parades to attract their messiah.
