Saturday 10th January – Oran – Algiers

Morning

  • After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll start our city tour at the Eckmuhl Corrida Arena (New Arenas), Oran’s historic bullfighting arena, a remnant of French colonial influence. Though no longer used for bullfights, the architecture and history make it a unique landmark in Africa.
  • We’ll then drive up to Santa Cruz Fort, a 16th-century Spanish fortress overlooking the city. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of Oran’s coastline before visiting the Chapel of Santa Cruz, a pilgrimage site linked to a cholera epidemic miracle.
  • Our visit will continue through Sid El Houari, Oran’s historic medina. This neighborhood holds the city’s oldest architecture, hidden alleyways, and remnants of Spanish, Ottoman, and French rule.
  • You’ll also visit the Palais du Bey, a former residence of Ottoman rulers that showcases Algeria’s pre-colonial past.

Afternoon

  • For lunch, you’ll stop at a traditional Algerian restaurant, where you can try local dishes like Chakchouka, Rechta, or Mechoui (grilled lamb).
  • We’ll head to Place du 1er Novembre, the heart of Oran, where you’ll see the grand statue of Emir Abdelkader and surrounding colonial-era buildings like the Oran Opera House.
  • Next, you’ll stroll through Boulevard de la Soummam, Oran’s main avenue lined with cafés, shops, and French-style buildings. We’ll also pass by the historic Hotel Royal, a symbol of colonial grandeur.
  • The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is your next stop. Once a Roman Catholic cathedral, now a public library, this 1930s Art Deco church is an interesting mix of European and North African design.
  • You’ll wrap up the day with a relaxing walk along Oran’s seafront promenade, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean.
  • After this, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your evening flight to Algiers, where you’ll meet the group members of our Saharan Odyssey: Algeria Tour.
