Syria Travel Update: Aleppo Opposition Forces Advancement

29th November 2024: Over the last days, starting from November 27th Syrian Opposition factions active in the Idlib province of Syria have made advancements towards the second largest city in Syria – Aleppo.

Only moments ago, rebels from the group have claimed they have breached the city of Aleppo by reportedly entering the area of New Aleppo and other Western suburbs. Our local team have reported the sound of bullets and missiles with reports claiming Russian airstrikes are currently being conducted in Aleppo, however this is yet to be confirmed. There were further reports that two separate incidents of car bombings on Friday November 29.

Over the last few days, rebels have taken control over small villages in the province of Aleppo, as well as Base 46, the largest military base in Western Aleppo. The Syrian Opposition factions have been clashing with government forces which has left over 180 (mainly combatants) dead and hundreds of civilian families displaced.

Rebel forces were active in Aleppo during the Syrian civil war, however this is the first breach of the city since government forces expelled the rebels in 2016. Ever since then, different Syrian Opposition factions have been active in the province of Idlib which is one of the few remaining territories not under control of the Syrian government or pro government forces.

Young Pioneer Tours will suspend all tours to Aleppo until further notice and will arrange alternative itineraries.
