Because Honduras is more than a place with rainforests teeming with wildlife, ancient Mayan ruins, and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea (not that we have anything against it!): it is also a place where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant Garifuna culture, with its infectious drumming rhythms, and go through colonial villages and beautiful mountains.

Our Honduras tours will allow us to scratch under the surface and go beyond the classic touristic circuits, to better understand this complex multi-ethnic country.

Independent Tours to Honduras

Below is an example Guatemala itinerary. This can be extended to other countries, such as Belize, Guatemala or El Salvador, or combined with other activities to create independent Guatemala tours.

Example of a Honduras itinerary (6 days)

Day 1 – Valle de Angeles

Arrival at your leisure in Honduras. Our local partners will pick you up at the airport or your hotel in case you arrive earlier and transfer you to Cantarranas
Free morning in Cantarranas, a picturesque village decorated with frogs – yes, they have frogs everywhere!
We will have our lunch and get to try our first hondureño food.
We will explore Valle de Angeles and see some of its cute villages where locals love to hang out.

Day 2 – San Juancito Mines – Tegucigalpa – Comayagua

After a traditional breakfast in our hotel, we’ll drive half an hour to the mining village of San Juancito that served as the headquarters of the Rosario Mining Company. The town is located inside the national park of La Tigra, Honduras’ first national park. We will visit the mines and learn about the impact it had. We’ll visit the first USA embassy in Honduras, which nowadays works as a museum.
We will drive 40 km to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras where we will do our city tour. We will learn about this interesting city located between hills, as we walk around its city centre, the main square Francisco Morazán with the 18th-century Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, the presidential house and the museum of national identity. We will grab some baleadas, the most iconic street food in Honduras, a big flour tortilla, filled with mashed “refried” red beans, crema and crumbled salty hard cheese, extra ingredients like meat and avocado can be added. And we will finish our tour admiring the views from El Picacho, one of the many hills Tegucigapa has.
Then we will drive 1 hour and half to Comayagua, a beautiful colonial town that was the capital of Honduras until 1880. We’ll admire the view from the cathedral’s bell tower, which also houses America’s oldest clock.
We will enjoy some traditional Honduras food for dinner, and if you still have energy after this long day, we will have some drinks.
Overnight in Comayagua.

Day 3 – La Esperanza – Gracias Lempira

We will have breakfast in our hotel and head to La esperanza, the highest town in Honduras.
We will stop in “el bosque de piedra”, a rare opportunity to witness a forest of fossilised trees. We’ll also check out “Cerro de Hoyos” where we can find around sixty 25-metre deep holes that nobody is exactly sure who and why were excavated.
We will have lunch in La Esperanza and learn about the indigenous Lenca Culture. The Lepa Wiran, meaning “Jaguar People” or “People of The Jaguar”, are Honduras’ largest tribal group, with an estimated population of more than 450,000.
The Lenca still preserve their traditions and food, which you can try when visiting the local market.
Then we will visit “la Gruta”, a cave located on a hill with views to the town. According to the legend, the National hero Lempira hid in this cave while fighting the Spaniards.
Then we will make our way to Gracias Lempira. We will visit San Cristobal fort, and walk around its historic centre, as we learn who Lempira was and why he is so relevant to Honduras’ history.

Day 4 – La Campa – San Manuel de Colohete

We start our morning driving to the nearby municipalities of La Campa and San Manuel de Colohete. In these villages, the majority of the population is Lenca. We will be able to meet the locals and learn about everyday life in these communities.
We will check-in our family run lodge located in a privileged spot in the mountains near San Manuel.

Day 5 – Copán Ruinas

Early birds can enjoy the sunrise at our mountain lodge, we will have breakfast and start our ~4 hour journey to Copán Ruinas.
We’ll check in our hotel, and go for a small walk around the village where we will have lunch, then we will head to the most famous attraction in Honduras.
Visit to the archeological site and museum of Copán. It is one of the most important sites of the Maya civilization, which was not excavated until the 19th century. The ruined citadel and imposing public squares reveal the three main stages of development before the city was abandoned in the early 10th century. We will be able to admire this Mayan settlement while the macaws fly over our heads.
Then we will visit the Luna Jaguar spa, where you can relax in their natural hot springs.
Dinner and farewell drinks.
Overnight in Copán.

Day 6 – Copán Ruinas

Breakfast in our hotel.
If you want to extend your trip to Guatemala, we will be transferred to the border.
For people finishing the tour here, we can assist with the transfer to the airport or any other city in Central America

Caribbean Coast

La Ceiba is the biggest coastal city and the gateway to the Honduras’ Caribbean, as well as a perfect combination of sea and mountain. On our tour you can explore the Pico Bonito Natural Park, along the river Cangrejal, and spot monkeys, toucans, iguanas and even jaguars in the tropical forest. Tela and Trujillo are two other coastal towns, smaller than La Ceiba, that you can visit during your Caribbean vacation.

Honduras’ Islands

Honduras has to main islands in the Caribbean, Roatán and Utila. Both have the white sand and turquoise waters you’d expect in the Caribbean. Roatán is bigger offers many diving and snorkelling opportunities in the second biggest coral reef in the world. You’ll also be able to experience the Garifuna culture, resulting from the mix of African, Arawak and Caribbean cultures. In the island, there are also sloth and monkey sanctuaries. Utila is smaller and less touristy, which is perfect to relax and disconnect. There are also smaller islands like the Cayos Cochinos, fifteen tiny islands that are a pure paradise. Those islands are way less spoiled than the majority of the Caribbean region.

Yojoa Lake

The biggest lake in Honduras is a perfect place for various ecotouristic activities, from speedboat tours, kayaking, birdwatching and trekking. It is home to the archeological zone of los Naranjos, located inside the natural park of the same name. The area features waterfalls and hot springs. It is perfect to enjoy Honduras’ nature, enjoy local food and relax

Frequently asked questions about travel to Honduras

Do I need a visa to travel to Honduras?

For most nationalities, a visa is not required for this destination for a stay of up to 90 days. However it's important to keep in mind that it's shared with its neighbouring countries Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador, which means if you travel my land in this countries, you will only have 90 days to visit all of them, crossing the border to Belize or Costa rica and enter again is a good way of getting more days

What is the best time to visit Honduras?

it’s best to avoid the summer months, since it's the rainy season, temperatures stay more or less the same during all the year.

Is Honduras safe for tourists?

You probably won’t notice anything nor feel threatened at any time, but precautions should always be taken in Honduras. In Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, like in any other city, avoid displaying your passport, large sums of cash and valuables. It's absolutely discouraged to walk alone at night in both cities. Avoid going alone to non touristic areas as assaulting can occur, always ask your guide. Sadly catcalling is very common in Honduras, while most of it being more annoying than dangerous, women should take precaution while going alone in the dark.

What currency is used in Honduras?

The currency in Honduras is the lempira, tho locals can refer to it as “peso”. $1 (USD) is worth approximately 24.69 lempiras. We recommend checking the exchange rate prior to the tour. There are ATMs available in all the big towns and some businesses will accept credit cards. However, it is recommended to have cash, especially in the rural areas where ATMs can be hard to find and credit cards may not be accepted. US dollars can be easily exchanged.

Are there any health precautions I should take before travelling to Honduras?

Travellers are advised to check with their healthcare provider for vaccinations and take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases. Common recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and routine vaccinations.

What is the local etiquette and customs in Honduras?

There are no clothing restrictions in Honduras; however wearing long, loose-fitting, light- coloured clothing will prevent mosquito bites. Comfortable footwear, sunglasses and hats are recommended; also, don’t forget your swimwear.

Is it possible to use a SIM card for mobile communication in Honduras?

In Honduras, there is WiFi in most hotels, restaurants and cafes. Travellers can also purchase a SIM card in most cities for the duration of their tour in the majority of convenience stores. Alternatively, you can get an Esim.
