Embark on a journey with YPT to one of the most famous of the Russian republics, Chechnya. Known today for all the wrong reasons, it used to be one of the most touristic areas of the old Soviet Union due to its stunning natural beauty and the culture of the fiercely nationalistic yet incredibly friendly Chechen people.
It doesn’t get much more adventurous and off the beaten track than this trip, that will have you crossing mountain ranges, hiking through the countryside where fierce battles took place, visiting rural villages, dining with proud Cossacks and embracing hidden wonders found in the North Caucasus.
Our journey will begin in the capital city of the Russian Federation, Moscow, where you’ll embark on a train journey to the recently war-torn Russian Republic of Chechnya. On arrival, you’ll see how Grozny rose up from the ashes to become one of the most peculiar cities of the Caucasus.
After spending several days exploring Chechnya, you’ll step into the Republic of Ingushetia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Checheno-Ingush ASSR split into two parts: the Republic of Ingushetia, which sided with Russia, and the Chechen Republic, which declared independence – starting the first Chechen war. History and politics are intertwined here and you’ll get to learn about the troubled 1990s in the region.
Continue your adventure and join YPT on our South Ossetia Independence Day and Abkhazia Independence Day Tours, which will take place right after this tour. Alternatively, join the Ultimate Chechnya And Caucasus Unrecognised Countries Tour for a complete discovery of the real Ciscaucasia with YPT!
If you would like to opt-out of the train adventure and fly to Grozny and out of Vladikavkaz instead, it can be arranged. Contact us for more information.
