This is one of our most exciting trips of the year as we’re spicing up our annual North Korean Grand National Day tour! We’ll not only be heading into Pyongyang for the massive national day celebrations marking North Korea’s Independence, we’ll then take you well off the beaten track by boarding an Air Koryo domestic flight to the far north east of the DPRK to the third largest city, Chongjin.
You’ll explore the largely rural province of North Hamgyong and spend two evenings with a North Korean homestay family within the spectacular Chilbo mountain range.
During your stay in Pyongyang, you’ll be catching all the must see sights of the capital such as Kim Il Sung Square, exploring the deep mysterious Pyongyang Metro, visiting the Mausoleum where Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il lay in state, the Korean War Museum, the Juche Tower, Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace and much more.
On National Day we’ll be taking part in every facet of the celebration process including spectating and partaking in the mass dance event involving over 3,000 university students, possible parades, fireworks and numerous other celebrations in Pyongyang.
Once the celebrations are over in Pyongyang, you’ll board our Air Koryo flight to Orang county located in the northeast. You’ll spend an evening in Chongjin city – the capital of North Hamgyong province and most famous in the country as the industrial and fishing leading city. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the recently renovated square, the revolutionary museum that holds history on the battle for liberation against the Japanese during WWII and stop by a local kindergarten where the workers of the Kim Chaek steelworks factory send their children to study.
Your next destination is Mt Chilbo, famous for its incredible nature of both land and sea. Here we’ll indulge in the only homestay available in the country for two nights. This one of a kind experience will lead us to spend your time eating, drinking, playing sports and exchanging photos with your North Korean home stay family. We’ll also take advantage of this mountainous region and go for gentle hikes along the peaks for spectacular views.
After a farewell with your Korean family, we’ll head to Orang Airport to board our return flight back to Pyongyang. This concludes our adventure and rare sights of the rural northeast of the DPRK.
No trip to North Korea is complete without visiting Panmunjom Village (the DMZ) and going further off the DMZ tourist path to view the secretive and controversial concrete wall.
The Mass Games, the world’s largest performance with over 100,000 performers is expected to take place during this tour! Now is your chance to watch this grand spectacular performance. Tickets are on-top of the tour cost and are paid in cash during your tour in Pyongyang. We highly recommend securing your spot on tour early as we expect spaces to fill up very quickly.
