ITINERARY

Friday 9th July

• Arrive into Gibraltar at your own leisure and check into our centrally located hotel.
• In the evening, we’ll meet up as a group and head out for some good food and local beers and get to know each other before going over the tour plan.
• Overnight in Gibraltar.

Saturday 10th July

• After breakfast, we’ll make an early start for our extensive 360 tour of the rock of Gibraltar!
• Our first stop will be the 100 Ton Gun, this is the world’s biggest black powder cannon that was used to defend the strategic port of Gibraltar. This behemoth has a maximum range of 8 miles, and was capable of piercing 15 inches of iron armor at 3 miles.
• Visit Europa Point which is the southernmost point of Gibraltar and the fishing village at Catalan Bay.
• We’ll pay a visit to the Pillars of Hercules. This was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar, Calpe Mons, is the Rock of Gibraltar.
• We’ll then see the famous Barbary Apes of the rock of Gibraltar. The Barbary macaque, is a species native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco along with a small population of uncertain origin in Gibraltar.
• Then for a highlight of the tour as we explore the phenomenal museum of the Great Siege Tunnel. This is a series of tunnels inside the northern end of the Rock of Gibraltar. They were dug out from the solid limestone by the British during the Great Siege of Gibraltar of the late 18th century. In WW2, the tunnel contained an operations centre where Dwight Eisenhower planned Operation Torch. Today it houses the City and The Siege Exhibition.
• We’ll get a look at the iconic O’Hara’s artillery Battery located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar.
• We’ll then visit the Moorish Castle of Gibraltar. It’s a medieval fortification comprising various buildings, gates, and fortified walls, with the dominant features being the Tower of Homage and the Gate House. Part of the castle itself also housed the prison of Gibraltar until it was relocated in 2010.
• Our last stop will be the WWII Airport Runway.
• We’ll then drive the 24km journey to the port of Algeciras to check into our hotel and meet the new tour members for the Ceuta and Melilla tour.
• Overnight in Algeciras.
