What year is it? The short answer to this is the current tear is 2024 AD, or 2024 CE, depending on your wokeness levels.
This of course happened on January 1st, BUT Russians and other Eastern Orthodox nations who celebrate “Old New Year” on January 14th, which by their calendar is January 1st (kinda). It is though still 2024, so not so important for our “What year is it” challenge.
Amazingly the question is one of the most searched terms on the internet, which truly makes you wonder just how drunk people must get, so as to have to ask the Google Gods “what year is it”? Or perhaps they are all time travellers! We hope it is the later, but regardless have decided to answer what year it is in blog fashion.
We’ve previously done a blog about the different new years in the world, which you can read here, but today we look at the measuring of years in different parts of the globe. Now we will caveat this with the fact that whilst there are numerous ways to measure what year it is, the Gregorian Calendar (2024) and January – December is how business is predominantly done throughout the world.
What year is it in North Korea? it is Juche 111
What Juche year is it? 2024 is Juche 111, 2024 will be Juche 112 (an important one). The Juche Year Starts in 1912 with the birth of Kim Il Sung, but to complicate things further 1912 is considered year 1. Not year zero, much like how we do centuries and indeed the birth of of big JC.
But of course there are other calendars than the North Korean one!

What year is it in the Hindu Calendar – it is 2079
The Hindu calendar is rather too close to the AD one. As per the Hindu date system it is now 2079. Which sounds kinda cool and futuristic.
What year is it for Cambodians – It is 2567
Seeing as I live in Cambodia and love the water fights of Khmer New Year, Cambodia should get a mention. New Year happens here in Mid-April, with the current year being 2566, with it being 544 years “older” than Jesus reckoning.
This just recently changed with Khmer New Year 2024, which also doubles as a huge water fight.
What year is it in Japan?

How about the Mayan Calendar?
We couldn’t find an answer to this one, but we did find one interesting article you can read here Remember that god awful movie saying the Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012? Well it looks like they meant 2024 – what with Covid and the imminent World War 3…
And you know what? They might well have been right. At least the year will be over soon…
So, if you are ever asking what year is it, but mean it more in this sense than a just woke up hungover and have no idea where I am, then we hope this article helps.
What year is it if you count from when Adam was born?
When recently visiting Bougainville I discovered the Twin Kingdoms of Papaala and Meekamui, they count the world starting from when Adam was born/made, as we all we know the world is just over 6000 years old, which puts us at roughly 6123, although some scholars put it as many as 9000 year ago….
Will this also be the year that North Korea reopens? We certainly hope so. You can read about our North Korea tours here.
